Your home’s thermostat may seem simple enough to operate, and provided your weekly routine isn’t disrupted, it will operate according to the schedule you have programmed into it. But, what happens on the days when you’re not following your normal routine? Do you know how to adjust your home’s temperature or activate the air conditioning during summer?

How a thermostat works

A thermostat is key to how your home’s furnace and air conditioner work by determining when and for how long that they operate. The vast majority of thermostats are programmable meaning that you can create a custom schedule for your home based on when you are at-home, away from home or asleep.

Most people know that programming a custom schedule into your thermostat can help you save money while also helping to conserve energy.  And so, creating a schedule with a lower temperature while you are at work or asleep saves energy, which translates into saving real money on your heating bills.

During the majority of time, your thermostat will work in the background, and you won’t need to think about it. However, if Monday is a statutory holiday and you’re home, or you have guests over until after you usually go to bed, how do you override the schedule?
