When you’re considering customizations for your new home, the kitchen and living room are likely to be at the centre of attention. Whether you’re relaxing or entertaining, you’ll be spending a lot of time in these areas and of course, you want them to be flawless.

But what about your entryway? It is, after all, the first thing your guests see when they visit. For this reason, it’s a pretty important place as it gives your visitors their first impression of your new home. So, when it comes to your entryway, here are few ideas to help you create the ‘grand entrance’ you deserve.

1. Express Yourself With Colour

First and foremost, choose a colour for your entryway that adds some personality. That’s not to say you have to have an outrageously bold colour (of course, if you want it, go for it!) but you’ll want to pick something reflects your personal tastes and sets the tone for the rest of the home.

For example, if you want to create a warm welcome and be bold at the same time, a rich red might be the way to go. Maybe you prefer a calmer, more natural vibe. In this case, you can ask your builder to keep the entryway in a more subdued, neutral shade. You can always add pops of colour with your décor later.

Next to colour, flooring is one of the simplest ways to add some character to your entryway; and the possibilities are endless! Hardwood, natural or engineered, is incredibly versatile and comes in a huge range of colours (engineered is a little tougher when it comes to pets and kids, though).

Alternatively, you can go with bold coloured tiles and patterns. Imagine ceramic tile in a vintage checkerboard pattern or a vibrant mosaic. You’ll really give your guests something to talk about!

3. Shed Some Light

Light fixtures are also a great way to make a statement in your entrance. Here too, you’ll want to work with your builder to incorporate something that really reflects your tastes. For example, if you like traditional décor, consider a classic chandelier. If you prefer something more modern, you may be partial to a contemporary pendant light. No matter your style, there are a variety of sizes, shapes, and finishes available to perfectly compliment your colour and flooring choices.

Also, don’t forget to speak to your builder about window placement, size, and shape. Natural light can be a huge asset in brightening up your entrance and boosting its appeal.

4. Have A Seat

Built-in seating is actually a great idea for every entryway in your home–even if it’s just coming in from the garage. For the front especially, this is a welcoming touch and invites guests to have a seat while they take off their shoes.

Benches are also a sneaky way to add extra storage to your home, as you can put away your winter or summer clothing, shoes, dog leashes etc. Add some built-in shelving and you’ll have a place to put your bags and room for additional décor as well.

Speaking of built-in, have you considered adding a statement feature like a foyer alcove ? Not only do they add a ton of character, but they can be quite practical in terms of strategically placing furniture like a table where you can toss your wallet and keys, or add décor items.

Alternatively, an alcove is another place where you can incorporate seating by adding a unique bench or settee. If anything, a cleverly painted alcove will provide an interesting focal point for guests when they enter.

6. If These Walls Could Talk…

If your walls could talk what would they say? Well nothing really, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give them some personality. Another thing you can talk to your builder about is incorporating a feature wall. Here again, there are endless possibilities and it all comes down to your personal sense of style and taste.

For instance, if you’re someone who loves rustic décor, consider a distressed wood panelled wall. A featured brick wall can add both an ultra-modern or vintage feel depending on the shade. You may even want to consider wainscotting around the entryway to add a classic, elegant effect.

We hope these ideas have inspired you to create your own plans for your awesome entryway. Be sure to write down your ideas to discuss with your builder when you’re ready to get started on your fabulous foyer. Remember, a good builder will not only work with you to bring your ideas to life, but they’ll move walls to make it happen.{{cta(‘e57ca4af-10d6-4611-95e2-90516781a5c2′,’justifycenter’)}}
